The 2005 Midwest Seahawkers Annual Charity Project
Saturday, October 8th

Midwest SeahawkersAt the 2005 event, Ambush at the Arch IV, the Midwest Seahawkers donated filled backpacks to the Backpacks for our Community Project. We had a whole table full of them, and they were presented to the Marcus Trufant Family Foundation for distribution. It truly was amazing to see all of those backpacks from a small group like us! Thanks to everyone who participated.

We also raised monies for several player foundations as well as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. We were able to get matching monies for Matt Hasselbecks Foundation, but unable to get the other two players matched. Here is the breakdown of the donations.

The Matching Funds were provided by one of our members, Sean Demaree, and Verizon. We thank Sean and Verizon for their help with this, and we look forward to their support in the future.

Thanks again to everyone at the Ambush who made this possible, especially Peter Flores for the time he put into contacting the foundations to attempt and get everyone matched. Also, to everyone that sent backpacks and school supplies for our community effort. I am very proud of what our Chapter has done! Thanks again!!

2004 Annual Event Raffle Fund Drive update

At the 2004 event, "Ambush at the Arch" in St. Louis, we held a raffle fund drive. All funds collected were to be distributed to three associated foundations: The Grant Wistrom Foundation, the Shaun Alexander Family Foundation and the Marcus Trufant Family Foundation.

Thanks to long time member Sean Demaree of Worthington, Ohio, the raffle funds were matched through his employer at Verizon. This brought the donation total to $1,800.00. So, in the best interest of all the foundations, the funds were split three ways, giving each foundation a generous $600.00 donation.

Special thanks all those involved who made this happen.

A group of diehard Seattle Seahawk fans are emulating their players in helping out in the community—even through that community happened to be enemy territory for their football team last weekend.

"We always felt the players did a lot in the community," said Scott Anderson, president of the Midwest Seahawkers fan club. "We thought we could do something in the community at away games."

So, 12 to 20 members spent much of Saturday morning, November 12 wielding brushes and applying black paint to an iron fence near the St. Patrick Center's McMurphy Grill in downtown St. Louis. The club contacted the United Way of Greater St. Louis' Volunteer Center to schedule a community "Days of Caring" project while they were in town for the Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams game on Sunday.

McMurphy Grill is a restaurant that provides training for clients at St. Patrick Center. The center is one of more than 200 health and human service agencies in Missouri and Illinois supported by the United Way in the St. Louis area. The center also is the largest provider of services to the homeless in Missouri with 19 programs serving more than 10,000 persons annually.

The Seahawkers decided to do community projects at away games for a variety of reasons, said Peter Flores, a St. Peters resident and club member who helped organize the event. There really isn't a home community for many club members. The three-year-old club has 125 members from Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Kansas, Indiana, Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, Oklahoma, New York, Pennsylvania, Arkansas and other states.

Many members of the club arrive a day or two before games and are looking for something to do, Flores said. Last year, club members volunteered to plant flower bulbs and to work at a Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati.

Flores said many club members want to get to know the community they're visiting. That can include volunteer activities as well as visiting museums, restaurants and other attractions. "One way to get to know a community is to work in it," said Flores.
